Why a data professional should learn web development

A model nobody can use changed nothing. Learning to build the application that exposes it is what gets data work out of the silo.

Data science and web development look like distant fields, but they’re far more connected than people tend to assume. One focuses on analysing large datasets to identify patterns; the other on building dynamic applications and sites. Integrating the two matters more every year.

Organisations use growing volumes of data to make decisions and improve their products. To do that they need a deep understanding of the statistics and machine learning that make it possible. But that isn’t enough: they also need to know how to integrate those tools into applications so people can interact with the data in a meaningful, accessible way.

The silo

That’s where web development comes in. Whoever builds applications can connect to databases, extract what’s useful and present it comprehensibly. That capability is crucial for any organisation trying to make use of its data.

But it isn’t enough for that skill to live only on the development side. If the person doing the analysis can’t integrate their models into an application, their work stays isolated in a silo, unused by the rest of the organisation.

On top of that, learning web technologies puts you much closer to the development teams. That improves communication, collaboration and, ultimately, the quality of what gets built.

What about visualisation tools?

It’s true that Power BI or Tableau let you build interactive dashboards without writing a line of web code. They’re genuinely useful and save an enormous amount of time.

But they have limits. They can be expensive, they aren’t always customisable, and they don’t always fit a specific need. Sometimes what’s required is more advanced customisation or deeper integration with other systems, and that’s where a closed tool falls short.

What opens up

Learning web development also gives you access to a toolkit of its own: visualisation libraries like D3.js or Chart.js let you build bespoke representations that complement your models and analysis, instead of settling for whatever charts a platform ships with.

The relationship between data and web development matters more every year. As companies try to get the most out of their information, they need data people who can also carry their models all the way into a real application. And they need the two teams to understand each other.
